Happy is in the House

Posted on

I started out 2012 with the blog name Ode to my Abode.  This past year I changed it to House of 34.  I wanted to share more than just DIY projects.  House of 34 is about sharing ideas and experiences, laughing and making fun of myself (and occasionally others, all with love of course), as well as DIY Projects.  My goal in writing about my DIY projects, though, is to encourage you to try new things yourself.  I’m not an expert at anything.  But for reasons not yet known, 😉 I’m not afraid to try anything either.  I believe if you have an idea in your head, you can do it.

Thanks for all your support!  Blogging has been a wonderful experience.  I have “met” some pretty awesome people in cyberspace! 😀  House of 34 is a happier place with all of you in it.

Thought I would share some of the top posts from 2012.  Thank you again!!

Happy New 365 Days!

Happy New Year!

I’ve thought about this past year, and although I managed to get a few projects done, I wondered if I made any sort of meaningful contributions to the world.

After scouring all of 2012’s posts, it became clear I didn’t change the world, but here is what I know… a) I have amazing followers, b) you still follow me even when I share my dorky moments, and c) some of these dorky moments maybe, just maybe, contributed a teeny tiny bit of wisdom, goofiness and laughter. 😉

Developed a revolutionary way of cleaning mattresses!

Discovered flat abs requires more than 8 once-a-week exercise sessions.  I wish I had better news on that.

Took a job as Test Drive Dummy and pushed my finger “through opening”.  It hurts like the dickens, people.

90 percent

Gave a name to a troubling condition called 90 percentitis.   It’s a problem many DIY-ers have when they have too many creative thoughts in their heads at one time.

Told the world to go crazy and buy TWO cans of frosting with cake mix!!

AND, last but not least, gave you way better directions on how to deposit a check at the ATM machine than Hubby gave me.  (The folks behind the security camera are still laughing!)

I hope this New Year brings you happiness, joy and oodles of laughter!

Bloggers and Authors and Me, oh My!

It’s a small world!

My friend Karen invited me to go to a sale one of her friends was having at a neighboring clubhouse, literally around the corner.  Turns out two bloggers were the ones putting on the sale.  They were getting rid of some stuff, wanting to simplify and declutter their homes.  “It’s better than a yard sale, but it’s not as new as retail” is how one of the sellers described the sale.

Well guess what?  The bloggers were Angela from Button Bird Designs and Myquillyn from The Nester.  How cool is that??  I thought so!

When we arrived, the line was out the door.  The clubhouse was so packed, you could barely move.  Everyone had their arms full of great stuff.  And the best part?  A portion of the proceeds are going towards Compassion International, a non Profit Christian child advocacy ministry.  How Awesome!

https://i2.wp.com/www.chattingatthesky.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Picture-241.pngAnother nice surprise was meeting the author of Grace for the Good Girl by Emily P. Freeman, whose sister happens to be The Nester.  Emily was absolutely lovely and I walked away with her book she so graciously autographed for me.

It IS a small world.  You just never know who you will meet.  Bloggers/people you admire, who are out there, somewhere in the world, may turn out to be your neighbor! 😉

Thank You for Digging my Blog!

Posted on

This is a little embarrassing… I have been neglectful at accepting the lovely awards I have been given, so I am going to thank everyone at once.  THANK YOU All FOR DIGGING MY BLOG!!  It makes my heart happy!

I don’t follow a lot of blogs yet, but the ones I do are totally awesome!   And I enjoy reading each and every one!  If there was a “You Totally Rock” award, I would pass that one to all of you as well!

Thank you Dana from CereusArt for nominating me for the “One Lovely Blog Award”. Dana has been with me from the beginning of my blogging experience. It means a lot to be given this award from her!  Dana’s blog is about her passion for coastal decor and living.  She also has an Etsy store where you will find beach, nautical, and coastal decor, seashell art, and custom beach themed gifts.

I received the “One Lovely Blog Award”, “Sunshine Award”, and “Kreativ Blogger Award” from Amy at Such the Like.  (Not all at the same time.  I’m just behind in my Thank Yous!)  Amy’s blog is about learning and trying new things.  I love that!  She’s teaching herself to crochet (and she really good at it!), to sew, garden and she is even raising chickens! 🙂  I just found out we share the same favorite alcoholic drink!  And I thought this drink was only known to me!!  Kindred spirits I’d say!  Thank you, Amy, for the awards!

I know I’m suppose to tell a number of things about myself with each award.  I will just combine them to one small list, so not to bore you all too much!

1.  I don’t care for meat.  I’m not a vegetarian, just don’t like the texture and all that chewing!  Yuck.  And if anyone describes meat as “juicy”, it’s all over for me.  Can’t even look at it.

2.  I return half the things I buy.  Is it guilt?  The realization I don’t need it?  Change my mind?  Who knows.  It makes Hubby happy though!

2.  I have a new car.  A CAR.  Not a mom-mobile.  There are no sliding doors or a third row.  I feel so grown up!

3.  I don’t sleep well.  May be age.  May be too much redecorating going on in my head.

4.  I would rather not eat than have to exercise.

5.  I think other drivers are idiots and feel it’s my duty to tell them how to drive. 😉  (and sometimes where to go)

6.  I think buying jeans, bathing suits and bras should be done while intoxicated.  Or on medication.

Thank you again for all the nominations!!

Inspiring Blog Award

Posted on

When I first started out blogging, I was alone in this adventure.  I didn’t know a soul.  No one I knew blogged.  Some of my friends didn’t even know what blogging was.  After I had some posts under my belt, I reached out to some of the “big” DIY blogs that inspired me to even consider blogging.  I always heard that blogging was like a “community”.  Everyone supports each other.  Only one replied, DecorChick, and she was generous to take the time to read my blog and offer encouragement and suggestions.  I never heard from any of the others.

I know, now, that I was a little naive.  These “popular” bloggers have so many followers, I’m sure they didn’t have time to check out my little blog.  And that’s okay.

I kept plugging along, trying to find my own style and hoping my personality would come through in my writing and projects.  (I am quite a hoot! 😉 )  I have discovered I love writing just as much as I do DIY-ing.

Then along came my first follower!  Someone likes me!  I couldn’t believe it.  And over the year that I have been blogging, this blogger has been my #1 fan from the blogging world.  She is Dana from CereusArt.  Her blog is about coastal decor and living and loving anything “beach”.  She also has an Etsy shop where she sell casual, coastal, one of a kind decor.  She is a talented lady!

But to me, she is what blogging is all about.  Dana is kind and generous and supportive.  She has been my blogging angel.

I received the “Inspiring Blog Award” from Jennifer at A Story of Light.  Her blog is very inspirational!  I look forward to every post.  Thank you Jennifer, for including me in your list of inspirational blogs!  I was amazed and honored! 🙂

The ideas of this award is to send it to 7 other inspirational bloggers.  I don’t have a lot of blogs I follow yet, but I love all of them.  Today, though, I wish to send this to Dana.  This award reads “Inspiring Blog Award”, but I think it should also say “Inspiring Blogger who is just so darn talented, awesome, cool, generous and supportive”.  Thank you for all your support Dana!  You’re the best!

The Versatile Blogger Award

Posted on

Wow!  Thank you Debbie at A Mom Inspired  http://amominspired.com  for nominating me The Versatile Blogger award!

In case you don’t know what the award is for…  The award is given by bloggers to other bloggers they love and read frequently.  (I had to look that up because I didn’t know what the award meant.)  So THANK YOU again Debbie for letting me know you enjoy my blog.

Everyone has heard “timing is everything” or “nothing is a coincidence”.  This is to you Debbie… Every night before I sleep I thank God for my day and for all the people in my life.  I also always pray for purpose and direction… what am I suppose to do, and why am I here kind of stuff.  Last night, feeling a little down, I actually prayed about my blog, should I continue, am I wasting time, is it just silly, does anyone really care?  I woke up this morning with a comment from you,  A Mom Inspired, saying you nominated me for this award.  You made my day.

Versatile Blogger Award rules :

If you are nominated, you’ve been awarded the Versatile Blogger award.

1. Thank the person who gave you this award. That’s common courtesy.

2. Include a link to their blog. That’s also common courtesy — if you can figure out how to do it.

3. Select 15 excellent blogs/bloggers that you’ve recently discovered or follow regularly.

4. Nominate those 15 bloggers for the Versatile Blogger Award

5. Finally, tell the person who nominated you 7 things about yourself.

I don’t have 15 blogs to nominate. I’m still enjoying discovering new ones. But here is a list of my all time favorites!

http://cereusart.com/ CereusArt – A Coastal Lifestyle Blog

http://suchthelike.com/ Such the Like

http://laborofwonder.com/ Labor of Wonder

http://pinktoesandpowertools.com/ Pink Toes & Power Tools

And I would choose http://amominspired.com/ A Mom Inspired if she didn’t already receive the award!

Now for the hard part… Seven things about me

1.  I have road rage.  Yes, you read that right.  Sweet little Laurie can swear up a storm behind the wheel.  It’s a lot of hard work to tell other people how to drive.  Sometime I have to tell them where to go and how to get there as well.

2.  I don’t like to cook.  If I didn’t have a family to feed, I would live on Nutella.

3.  I’m very interested in the history of religion, spirituality and angels.  I have so many questions.

4.  I became crafty and a DIY-er after having my first child and sitting at home watching HGTV and staring at the walls.

5.  My hubby doesn’t mind me shopping because I return most of what I buy.

6.  I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be/do when I grow up.

7.  I feel too young to have a child going to high school next year, but yet I have a twin sister who is a grandma four times already.  Boggles the mind, doesn’t it??

Dining Room turned Library/Office

Posted on

Happy Monday!

I’m almost finished redoing  my “dining room that’s not a dining room”.  Let’s call it my new Library/Office.  Over the weekend I finished the drapes and got them hung.

I have to give a shout out to my favorite local fabric store, Tony’s Fabrics, for coming through and finding more fabric for me.   Panic set in when I finally decided on the fabric for my drapes and they didn’t have enough to make two.  That old saying “you snooze you lose” applied to me big time!  I don’t know if it was the tears in my eyes, the pouty lip or the kindness of their hearts, but they found more fabric and special ordered it for me.  I LOVE THAT STORE!  And the staff is generously helpful, offering tips and advice.  Always a great thing when you don’t know the quantity you need to buy, or even the type of fabric you need to use for a particular project.

The bookcases came from Ikea.  I love them!  The difference they alone make in the room is huge.  They are from Ikea HEMNES series.  The chairs came from HomeGoods (of course!).  I only bought two, but I’m thinking of picking up two more, or maybe coordinating chairs.  I’m not a matchy matchy kind of girl.  The paint color is a rich brown called Sierra Spruce from Benjamin Moore.

The room is almost complete.  I’m looking for a round table to add to the room.  I’m thinking of making one actually.  But I’m having a really hard time finding an unfinished wood round table top.  No luck at Lowes or Home Depot.  ; (  Any suggestions??

Still need some artwork on the walls.  I will post more pictures when the room is complete.

Parsons chairs from HomeGoods. $99.00 each.

Bookcases from Ikea. Color Grey/Brown

Drapes are finally made! Woohoo!!

Take Memory, Give me Sleep

Posted on

This blog has been an awesome way to document my DIY projects, find decor ideas, share inspirations and meet other like-minded bloggers.  I didn’t know if I would enjoy writing, but I have discovered I love it.  Life can be funny and I like to find the humor in it.  Sharing how I think about things is a great creative outlet.

Of course being a wife, mom, daughter, sister and friend, there are so many things to talk about.  And being over 40 is a subject in its self! Pinned Image Getting older (I said older, not OLD!), comes with all kinds of topics women can relate to.  Take memory and sleep, for example.  Sometimes it hurts my brain just to remember why I walked into a room or where I put my keys, but when I want to go to sleep, I remember everything, think about everything, go over everything and subjects like motherhood, religion and spirituality, and what to name my next Pinterest board will keep me up at night!

Pinned ImageI would like to share some of my “non DIY” thoughts with you on occasion.  I have considered starting another blog just for the “other side” of me, but that seemed silly, and this blog keeps me busy enough.  So, if you don’t mind, my favorite followers, I would like to add a little more Laurie into this blog.

I will always have DIY projects going.  I don’t know how not to! ha!  If I’m not working on my house, I will be working on someones house.  It seems I have misplaced the off switch to my brain.  Until I find it, I will be thinking, creating and blogging. : )
